A festival in honor of Les Kurbas’ 120th birthday and the Les Kurbas Theatre’s 20th anniversary!

Theatre as a home, Theatre as a school—this is a territory of reciprocated instigation... At the Les Kurbas Theatre, it is a place where the ideas Kurbas, Stanislavsky, Grotowski, Vasiliev, Brook and Barba act as the impetus for open provocation to the ideas of those who come here to study, create, and investigate. We call this territory «Alma Mater.» Its main function is to help one find oneself, and the path to creative realization.

This festival, it is an assembly of those whom the Les Kurbas Theatre has instigated, and who have instigated us; those whose unrelenting search on the boards of the stage goes on without end!

Marionet Theatre (Kyiv, Ukraine)
«Macbeth» by W. Shakespeare
Director: Mykhailo Yaremchuk

«Macbeth» by W. Shakespeare theatre performance (premiere was in May, 2007) is a result of few years lasting creative search. In this performance theatre moved away off widen linear performance’s construction and created a territory for game, which is based on original (author’s) conception of stage material treatment. Was invented an optimal solution of stage space in chamber stage conditions, in which organically combine style and express means of drama theatre, marionette theatre and mistrial vertep. Nearly all scenes are solved in parallel many voices, as in jazz music.
There is no Macbeth as such by creative group treatment; there is a performer, who reproduces a line of Macbeth’s inner life. But after theatre version, he is not a concrete man, but social phenomenon, which is acting by all figures at the same time: every one of them is a reproduction of one of his shapes. The way from origination of terrible, destructive idea, across its incarnation till falling down in abyss, is researching.

DAKH Centre of contemporary art (Kyiv, Ukraine)
«Theatre of laugh and sin, Love Den or Ukrainian Decameron» after Klim
Director: Vladyslav Troyitsky

«Ukrainian Decameron» is a bright den’s world where joy and pain, laughter and tears, life and death — everything is binded together existing on a verge of a different being of that mysticaly mysterious and unknowable Ukraine which is so close and at the same time is so far from us. This is also the life of Ukrainian village with its original songs, humour and vodka and that world where nobody would be surprised at a conversation with Death in a simple «neighbouring» way, sitting on a porch and noone would wonder at risen dead man dance, procession of devils or man-cock.
«Ukrainian Decameron» is also the tragedy. The tragedy of a whole people’s life and a desperate cry from the heart to God.

«Odyssey» after Homer
Director: Oleksandr Bilozub

Plastic action after Homer’s «Odyssey» poem tells about majestic calmness of time, in which hero is traveling to come back with victory to home. But this voyage is long, full of tension and struggle. And the shortest way to home lies through the own soul — this is a way to Fatherland and to yourself.
There is minimum text in performance — modern choreography and ancient Greek hymns, which are combining ancient Ukrainian epos elements.

Creative Workshop «Theatre in a Basket»
«Richard after Richard» after W. Shakespeare «Richard III» chronics motives
Director: Iryna Volytska

The performance «Richard After Richard» begins at the moment when Shakespeare’s history «Richard III» comes to an end. Spectators are free to decide when and under what circumstances the action is taking place. Perhaps, this is the last night of the tyrannical king before his final battle. Perhaps, he is over there, at a place of eternal punishment. With the key concepts and phrases of the Shakespearean drama, the performance appeals not to the peripetias of the play, but to the meta-sujet of Richard III as a hero of the mono-drama par excellence.

«Waiting for Godot» by Samuel Beckett
Director — Oleksiy Kravchuk
Stage design — Vlodko Kaufman
Costume design — Natalka Shymin

In interpretation of the most famous play of the XX century «Waiting for Godot» by Les Kurbas Theatre, the main characters Vladimir and Estragon are not just beggars who meet in the emptiness, these are two life-wrecked actors, who come to the place, where they come every day during their whole life — to the theatre. Here they are not just playing their roles pretending to be someone else, — the drama of their own life, which passes by in waiting and hoping that something will change for them with the appearance of somebody else.
